Intaglio printing produces an image from ink that has been rubbed into lines and textures recessed into a printing plate. It is the opposite of the relief method where the image is printed from the surface. The process was developed in the 15th century and allows for detailed drawings to be reproduced as multiples. The techniques include etching, aquatint and engraving. A press is required.
“Before printing was discovered, a century was equal to a thousand years.” – Henry David Thoreau
